International Day of the Girl Child
October 11, 2020
International Day of the girl child is celebrated annually on 11th October across the world. It marks the importance of girls’ rights, equal treatment, education and employment opportunities and many more. The day also talks about the problems facing by the girls in the areas of discrimination, child marriages, and crimes against women.
In other words, the international day of girl child focuses on the challenges, empowerment and fulfilment of human rights for the girls.
A non-governmental organization “Plan International” served as the backbone into securing a day for the girls’ rights. Eventually, the Canadian Government put forth a proposal for celebrating a special day in the United Nations.
On 19th December 2011, the United Nations declared 11th October as the International Day of the Girl Child. It intends to recognise girls’ rights and the challenges faced by girls across the world. The theme of the International Day for the Girl 2020 is “My voice, our equal future” – let’s seize the opportunity to reimagine a better world inspired, energised and recognised, counted and invested in by adolescent girls. The theme of this year 2020 focuses on
- Living free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, HIV and AIDS
- Learning new skills as per their wish.
- Lead as activists accelerating social change
