Generally, a quarter refers to one-fourth of a whole. A year, which has 12 months, is divided into four quarters. That is for three months. A quarter is usually represented as Q1 for the first quarter, Q2 as the second quarter and so on. While representing a quarter for a year, it is expressed as Q1 2020 or Q1/2020.

Hence, investors do not need to wait until a company files its annual report; rather, use these quarterly reports to examine the health of the company. Quarterly reporting helps companies to develop a structured approach for short-term results.
