What is the difference between among and amongst?

The words among and amongst share the same meanings. Though they are used interchangeably, they have a subtle difference. The word “amongst” is used before a word that starts with a vowel and is considered as more formal and less frequent. For example, he is sitting amongst others.

However, the word “among” is most common in modern English. But the variant “amongst” is used a little frequently in British English compared to that of in American English.
